Lifeguarding Training is offered at the Pratt Aquatic Center. Must be at least 15 years of age, pass a skills evaluation, and attend all sessions (five sessions including the pre-test).
List of Requirements:
1. The minimum age to be a lifeguard is 16 years of age. You may enroll in the Lifeguarding Course if you will turn 16 years of age before the last scheduled class session.
2. Please bring proof of age to the pre-test.
3. To participate in the class you must be able to pass the pretest of the following skills:
1.) Swim 300 yards or 12 lengths continuously in the following order: 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing (swim with face in the water), 100 yards of breaststroke (breaststroke kick), 100 yards of either the front crawl or breaststroke. Swimming on side or back is not allowed. Goggles are also not allowed.
2.) Starting in the water, swim 20 yards, surface dive 1-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object. Return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object using only legs and exit the water without using a ladder or steps. This must be done within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
3.) Tread water legs only for 2 minutes. The skills evaluation will occur on the first day of the course.
4. Bring a swimsuit and towel everyday.
